Northwestern's Extra-Cool Extracurriculars

A look into what college students do with their (little) free time

✏️By Sarah Filby✏️

For university students around the world, schoolwork can often take over their entire life. At Northwestern University, this is not necessarily the case.

The school has a reputation across the United States and the world for being a prestigious academic institution. According to the 2018 Best Colleges National University Rankings, Northwestern is ranked 11th in the nation. So, it would only make sense that students would be spending all of their free time studying, right?

Wrong.

There are countless ways for students to pursue their goals and passions outside of academics on campus. Three activities students can participate in are:

  1. Varsity/intramural sports
  2. Student organizations/activities
  3. School-sponsored special events

Below are examples of these activities and stories of students who take part in them .

1. Varsity/Intramural Sports🏆

There are over 400 student-athletes competing for Northwestern University, and Weinberg freshman Justine Banbury is one of them. A member of the varsity women's fencing team, Banbury trains for at least three hours a day, five days a week. The rest of her jam-packed schedule is filled with challenging classes, various meetings, and a sliver of downtime to spend with friends.

2. Student Organizations/Activities🌟

McCormick sophomore Manan Shah is a member of the NUStars club at Northwestern. The club promotes space technology and exploration, and is composed of six different teams. Shah is the leader of the RASC-AL, or Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts Academic Linkage, team, which focuses on more abstract aspects of space exploration. The team competes in NASA-sponsored RASC-AL competitions.

Listen to Shah discuss his experiences with NUStars here.

3. School-Sponsored Special Events🏫

Skating at the Norris Ice Rink is a winter tradition for many students at Northwestern. Normally, it costs $3 for students to rent skates. On February 22, however, students were offered free skate rentals at the Norris Ice Rink. The event was sponsored by Wildchat, a phone peer listening service for students. Stress relief was the main goal of the event.

Watch students enjoy the event here.
